The September 10 Committee of the Whole meeting featured a key presentation from Tamara Olson, BC Ferries Community Relations Manager, and Floridor Oprea, Project Manager, who provided an update on the progress of repairs at the Crofton Terminal Berth. The aging berth, which has faced several structural issues over the past year, is now undergoing critical repairs to ensure continued service reliability.
During the presentation, Olson highlighted the importance of these repairs for the local economy, given that the terminal serves as a vital connection point between Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island. BC Ferries has identified various repair options, and Council heard about both short-term fixes and long-term rebuilding strategies that could impact service schedules. The timeline for repairs will be dependent on weather conditions and available funding, but BC Ferries is committed to maintaining service with as few interruptions as possible.
Floridor Oprea provided more technical details on the structural issues facing the terminal and emphasized that repair work is necessary to prevent further deterioration. “We’re focused on making sure the repairs not only address current concerns but future-proof the terminal for years to come,” said Oprea.
The North Cowichan Council expressed support for BC Ferries’ efforts but raised concerns over the potential impact of service disruptions on local businesses. Mayor Rob Douglas encouraged BC Ferries to prioritize community engagement throughout the repair process to ensure residents are kept informed of any potential delays.
BC Ferries’ commitment to transparency and collaboration with the municipality was met positively, and further updates will be provided to the council as repairs progress.
