Vancouver Island was blanketed in heavy snowfall this past week, causing disruptions across the region, from power outages to school closures. The winter storm brought up to 20 centimetres of snow, creating hazardous conditions on the roads and increasing demand for emergency response services.
The severe weather led to multiple power outages, with BC Hydro warning residents about the potential for more disruptions as snow accumulated on power lines and trees. The storm’s intensity was particularly felt around the new Cowichan hospital area, where ongoing outages left many without electricity for extended periods. Crews worked tirelessly to restore power, but the widespread nature of the outages made repairs challenging.
Students across the Cowichan Valley School District enjoyed a surprise snow day as worsening conditions led to school closures. Authorities deemed the roads unsafe for school buses and travel, prioritizing student and staff safety. Commuters also faced significant challenges, with treacherous road conditions causing delays and increased accident risks.
With the heavy snowfall, the City of Duncan reminded residents to take proactive measures in keeping sidewalks and driveways clear. Officials emphasized the importance of shoveling snow promptly, applying sand or salt for traction, and checking on elderly neighbors who might need assistance during the cold snap. Keeping storm drains clear was also highlighted to prevent ice buildup and potential flooding once temperatures rise.
While the initial snowfall has settled, meteorologists warn that additional snow squalls could be on the way, potentially worsening conditions before the end of the week. Residents are advised to stay prepared, stock up on essentials, and stay informed on weather updates as the winter storm season continues.
Despite the disruptions, the snowfall has also brought some picturesque winter scenery to Vancouver Island, transforming parks and neighborhoods into snow-covered landscapes.
