North Cowichan’s Economic Development Action Plan Moves Forward with Strategic Priorities

In an October 18th meeting, North Cowichan’s Economic Development Committee advanced its Economic Development Action Plan, a critical roadmap for the region’s sustainable growth. The Action Plan, developed with insights from Deloitte, is built around five strategic priorities: improving the local business climate, supporting traditional industry adaptation, nurturing new economic opportunities, building an attractive community, and promoting regenerative economic principles.

During the meeting, Jamie Vann Struth from Deloitte presented the draft priorities, which drew from consultations with local businesses, community surveys, and First Nations engagement. One primary aim is to streamline North Cowichan’s business approval processes and establish partnerships with Quw’utsun Nation, reflecting a commitment to sustainable, cooperative growth. Specific actions include efforts to alleviate housing shortages to attract talent, enhance transit links, and provide public amenities.

Council members voiced support for these priorities, stressing their alignment with broader environmental and economic goals. Jennifer Aldcroft, North Cowichan’s Climate Change Specialist, highlighted regenerative principles as essential to future-proof the local economy against environmental and social challenges. With a focus on creating a resilient local economy, the plan is set to receive further input from CVRD, First Nations, and business leaders before final adoption.
